Deformity is not
considered as a disability, but its affect is more devastating. One often hears
of victims of burns and other deformities shy away from society. The causes are
twofold, forming a vicious cycle. First the deformity forces victims to aloofness
avoiding unpleasant attention, secondly, people around, instead of offering
empathy make comments and suggestions, forcing victims to seek solitude.
The South Kolkata Sannidhya was formed in November 2009 (Reg under Societies Registration Act of India) with the aim of mainstreaming of the survivors and victims of victims of deformities arising from burns and cleft-lip palate, through medical and rehabilitative process. We are a Kolkata (Capital of West Bengal, India) based organisation, operating in different parts of the State presently. Our concentration is the cause of women and children who are victims of burns and deformities like cleft-lip and palate, especially those economically or socially under-privileged. Together with conducting awareness campaigns on prevention and safety measures against burns, we provide funded surgical and medical assistance. As an extension we also organize Health awareness campaigns through quizzes and interactive sessions. As a part of rehabilitation, we teach the survivors handicrafts which are sold at platforms, providing them with some monetary support.

Since 2009 December, we have helped 5 victims who approached us during our awareness campaigns and by referral. They were provided with operations under eminent surgeons, and quality pre and post operative care and counseling. Monetary and other essential supports for the entire process were raised from various individuals and stakeholders by this organization.
We are a member of Aman (International) and Maitree (state level) a network working against domestic violence and women’s rights, issues integrally related to our Agenda. This helps us to communicate with related organizations, who work towards a similar goal, hence dedicate our services more effectively. To ensure capacity building, self awareness and skill enhancement, we actively participate in different trainings, workshops and programs conducted by other groups at national and international platform.
Please go over to the page 'Our Journey so Far' to see our activities and cases since November 2009.
